The sharpest grudges often live in the smallest rooms of our hearts.
Thank you for the quiet warmth of a morning cup of coffee. That first sip, when the house is still and the day hasn't yet demanded its pound of flesh, is a small mercy. It is a reminder that goodness exists before we have done anything to earn it. It is a love that is simply *there*, waiting for us to wake up.
That is how Your love finds us. Not after we have sorted out our feelings or apologized enough times. It is the first move. "We love because he first loved us." It is the love that precedes our patience, our kindness, and our willingness to let go. It is the only reason we can even begin to forgive the coworker who took credit again, or the family member who knows exactly which buttons to push. Because left to our own devices, we would hold on. We would keep a ledger of every slight, every harsh word, every broken promise. The weight of that ledger is exhausting.
Sometimes, the grace to forgive feels like a muscle we don't have. We want to be free of the bitterness, but the act of releasing the debt feels impossible. We struggle to find the strength to say, "I will not hold this against you," when everything in us wants to be right.
So we come to You, not with a grand display of our own forgiveness, but with our empty hands. We ask for the grace to love the person in front of us, not because they deserve it, but because You first loved us when we didn't. Loosen the grip of our resentment. Soften the hard edges of our pride. Help us to see the person who hurt us as someone else’s beloved child, as flawed and as needing grace as we are. Let the love You have poured into our own lives be the well we draw from when our own well runs dry.
We praise You, the God who loved us first. You are the source of every gentle word and every act of release. We rest in the truth that we are known, and still loved. May that quiet certainty carry us through the noise of this week.
Amen.
